Last night I attended my first live United Football League game after covering the development of the league from an idea in Bill Hambrecht’s head to a live, functioning professional league. A lot could be written about the game, well, a lot could be written about the Locos’ domination which was complete and total. Something could be written about the heart that the Sentinels showed on the sideline even as they were manhandled. I could even write about the experience of being on the field and having the opportunity to meet so many of the folks associated with the league – ranging from Doug Flutie to GM Rick Mueller.

Brooks Bollinger threw for four touchdowns as the Tuskers rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to clobber the New York Sentinels 35-13 in front of an announced UFL crowd of 11,203 at the Citrus Bowl on Saturday night.

Tonight at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando, fans had a chance to get their first glimpse of the United Football League. The teams still have a ways to go before the season begins in two weeks, but tonight was proof that the UFL is much more than critics expected. The Tuskers and the Sentinels played hard-hitting, quality football, giving the small crowd plenty to cheer about.

The night started with the punt teams taking turns. Todd Sauerbrun and the Tuskers punted first. Sauerbrun still has the strong leg that made him a three-time Pro Bowl punter. The Sentinels punter didn't have as much leg or accuracy. Because this was a controlled scrimmage, not most of the punts were not returned. If the punt was returned, the coverage team usually stopped after first contact. The kickoff teams used the same set-up.

At a recent UFL executive meeting in Orlando, Commissioner Michael Huyghue, along with each of the head coaches, announced the addition of many highly qualified assistant coaches to their rosters for the League’s upcoming “Premiere” season. Of the 30 coaches being announced today, nearly 85% have walked the NFL sidelines as a player, coach or both. Commissioner Huyghue also named San Francisco Head Coach Dennis Green as Chair of the UFL’s Competition Committee, a role he had previously held in the NFL.
