Great day in Mobile Tuesday. For starters, the weather was as nice as we have experienced in our 16 years of coming to the Senior Bowl…no jacket required.
Both teams went through full practices, starting with the North squad in the morning and the South in the afternoon. The Senior Bowl is traditionally a great place to evaluate offensive and defensive lineman. We were really impressed with Idaho offensive lineman Mike Lupati who strangely spent his career at Idaho playing guard. It took all of one practice for the Detroit Lions coaching staff, who is coaching the North team, to move him outside to left tackle. He has the size, feet and long arms (35 plus inches) to protect a team’s franchise quarterback. On the other side of the ball, Penn State DT Jared Odrick was impressive with his strength and effort. Special teams aren’t a real priority in All-Star games but it is an opportunity for the kickers and punters to display their skills for scouts. Michigan punter Zoltan Mesko took advantage of the stage to boom a few nice punts at the end of the morning practice.
A lot of attention this week has been on Florida QB Tim Tebow and his ability to adapt to playing from under center and tweaking his long release. However, he’s not the only South QB trying to show evaluators he can drop back and read defenses. West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown and Oklahoma St. QB Zac Robinson both spent their careers in the spread offense and are taking snaps under center for the first time here this week. Yesterday, we mentioned Ole Miss RB Dexter McCluster as the smallest player in the game. He may be small but it seemed as though every time he touched the ball Tuesday he made something happen. We wouldn’t be surprised if he has a big game on Saturday.
Last night Commissioner Huyghue hosted a function for UFL representatives, agents and coaches. Over one hundred people attended this great event and all were really impressed with the energy and excitement about the UFL. Tonight we are hosting a UFL Cocktail Party at Café’ Royal here in downtown Mobile. This event is another chance for League executives and coaches to mingle with player agents and NFL people interested in the United Football League.
