Meet Our Newest Owner...Bill Mayer

Commissioner Michael Huyghue - June 08, 2009

The announcements just keep coming from the UFL.  At a press conference this afternoon, Bill Mayer was announced as the owner of the NY franchise and an investor in the UFL.   From the first time I met Bill Mayer, I knew we shared a similar vision of showcasing untapped football talent and providing high quality, competitive professional football to fans in underserved markets.  (For a complete bio of Bill Mayer, please go to the About Us section of our website).   Bill has a great business mind and he, along with Paul Pelosi and Bill Hambrecht, are tremendous assets to our League.  Also, at our press conference, NY Head Coach Ted Cottrell spoke with the media and expressed how fortunate he felt to be given the opportunity to lead a pro team.  He is excited to return to NY after having served as Assistant Head Coach & Defensive Coordinator for the Jets.  We had hoped to stream our press conference but due to technical difficulties we were unable to.

Prior to today’s press conference, we held another League meeting where we reviewed our uniform development, saw mock-ups for our local ticket advertising campaign and discussed partnerships with local charitable organizations.   Other topics under discussion included player signings, training camp and equipment needs.  While many of the items mentioned above are still being finalized, I point them out to you so you can see we keep moving forward and will be releasing this information shortly.

I know that I keep saying it but it is truly an exciting time for the UFL.  Tomorrow, we will continue making news with a formal announcement of our Vice President & General Manager Rick Mueller.  On Thursday, I will be in Las Vegas along with Coach Fassel to present a check to the Las Vegas High School Association and then more player workouts on Saturday.  Our media tour ends in Casa Grande, Arizona for the ground-breaking of the city’s Performance Institute on the 16th.   The clock is ticking and we are ready …

You got some nice talent on those rosters I saw on ESPN. Most are ex 2nd 3rd players, I like Quinn Grey, i feel like with a full season under his belt he could get back into the league as backup or stay with the UFL and become a possible HALL OF FAMER the with Travis Taylor. If you guys could land Graham Harrel, Chase Daniels, Mike Williams (former USC Wideout), that kid who use to play for Hawaii and broke Ty Detemers records, Chung i believe, Chris Leak, Adam "Pacman" jones, J.P Losman ( would b a GREAT PLAYER int his league in my opinion), Matt Jones (fromer Jaguar) Andre Woodson, Drew Henson, Kliff Kingsbury (former Texas Tech stud), ken dorsey, ashely lelie, Eric crouch, Quincy Monk (He went to the same High school as me WOHS). All these guys i named should get in contact with UFL becuase I truly believe that they would be stars on what ever team they are on.

This is great. I love the idea of another league. I was one of the few who thought the XFL was a good idea and think had it tried to be an actual football league rather than WrestleMania lite it would have worked. There is a big gap between players who are good in college and those who are NFL ready. The UFL will help to close that gap and give these players a place to go to not only continue to develop and get a shot at the NFL, but play some good football in the process. Can't wait for the season!

I had the opportunity to watch the NY press conference and I am optimistic about Bill Mayer's involvement with the UFL. He said this investment/franchise differs from his involvement in MLS based strictly upon its structure and discipline. The league appears to have great leadership in place and has made incredible accomplishments over the last 18 months.

This sounds great. I love football and I can't get enough of it. Even down to the video games and Madden NFL. I think that this could be great, I think the UFL could have playoffs and a championship game. I could even see championship games between NFL and UFL, in which the best of the best players in the NFL and UFL face off, Champions Versus Champions. I do hope that the NFL would accept something like this in open arms because it would drive lots of fans crazy. I haven't read much on how your season's schedule would work out but I would love for it to be year long football, so when the NFL goes off-air the UFL comes in.
