Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Ready for the "Premiere" Season

Commissioner Michael Huyghue - February 11, 2009

I had goosebumps watching the Super Bowl this year.  There was no greater platform than this year’s big game to further illustrate that sometimes the most talented players are overshadowed in the NFL. We all have heard the great rise to fame story of two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner who was signed by Green Bay as an undrafted free agent only to be released less than 4 months later.  Without the chance to hone his craft in the Arena League and NFL Europe, Warner would not have been the starting QB in this year’s Super Bowl.  What about NFL Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison who was cut three times by the Steelers and will now forever be known for his amazing 100 yard TD return?  Warner and Harrison are the types of players who will get a chance to thrive in the UFL.  Truly, I could not have made these stories up.

By now, you have heard of the UFL’s plans for its “Premiere” season.  But what does that really mean to you the fan?  It means from October through potentially Thanksgiving weekend, there will be more football for more fans who want to watch affordable, entertaining and quality action during the traditional football season.  In addition to each team’s home stadium, we are also taking some games on the road into markets that we feel would be good for 2010.  The goal is to whet the appetites of fans and then to expand to six to eight teams in markets that have truly embraced us.  Affordability of tickets is going to be key to our overall success.   By pricing our tickets in a manner in which a family of four can comfortably afford to attend our games, we are in essence grooming our fans of tomorrow.  To me, this is a no-brainer.

For those who can’t make it to a game due to team proximity, we are going to address those issues with future expansion and a television partner committed to bringing you into the action regardless of the area from which you are watching.  With the infusion of the newest technology, the UFL pledges to provide our at-home fans a birds-eye view every Thursday and/or Friday evenings during our season.  From eavesdropping on coach-to-QB communications to following the players into the locker room at half-time, our goal is to bring an up-close and personal feel to each UFL game.

The reaction from coaches and players to the UFL has been overwhelming.  Whether they are using our League as a stepping stone or one last chance to play in the big game, players and coaches see great potential in our League and are anxious to be a part of it.  As a result, our fans are going to see the highest talent, both on the field and the sidelines.  We expect to attract and attain the most highly recognizable and experienced head coaches in the country, with salaries that are competitive with major college and other professional leagues (including the NFL).  There has been much speculation on our first four coaches, and while I am not going to confirm nor deny any names just yet, I can tell you that many, if not all, are familiar names. Our player salaries are on a per game basis and will be typically higher than the NFL’s minimums and practice squad salaries.  With the greater opportunity for exposure and financial rewards that our League offers the players, we anticipate a player pool of highly talented athletes on our rosters.  Who knows, come November, we may just be discussing the next greatest talent on the gridiron…maybe even the future Kurt Warner or James Harrison?  I can’t wait until kick-off…

I am excitted to see some life in the UFL. We have been waiting a long time to see an announcement, and now that it is finally here along with the new website, I am still on the bandwagon. This has great promise and wish the best of luck in the future. Lets go team Orlando!

I understand the UFL has challenges and the state of the economy certainly didn't help. I believe the UFL should stick with one city per team ie., New York, Orlando, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Or a regional approach and changing it as it expands. I wish the UFL success.

You are doomed to fail if you play during the NFL season. Playing during the NFL season is simply put - stupid! Fans get their "football fix" during the NFL season, who cares that you will play on a different night than the NFL. You will be against fans "going out time" on Thursdays and Fridays. The NFL plays on Sundays for a reason, if it were profitable the NFL would play strickly on Thursday and Friday nights. Do not get me wrong, I want you to suceed, but be smart about it, (learn from the mistakes of the old USFL) play during NFL off season. If you maintain direct competition with the NFL by playing during their season (different night or not), you will be crushed by the NFL and bore fans to death with a lack-luster product.

If you guys run into any problems getting this league going. Consider merging with the AAFL, or the UNGL. We the fans need another league very bad.

I must say that I'm very excited to hear that this league is about to take off. My biggest thing is that this is a new league and its launching during the regular NFL/College football season. How you're planning on bringing in viewers/create new fan base during this time is going to be a challenge. If it were me, I'd push back the start date to right after the NFL Super Bowl, with heavy advertising during the start of the NFL playoff week. This will grab viewers attention and when football season is over....they realize it's not really over cause the UFL is launching with familiar faces. I have a lot of ideas, if you want to chat email me at gtskyrider@gmail.com

I have to say I was very excited about the startup United Football League and was looking forward to having a team in Hartford. However, I cannot see how this will work sharing a franchise with another city. I think it is a bad idea and will be difficult to sell merchandise. I would like to see Hartford have its own franchise in the future.

I am very excited about another football leauge, I really loved the USFL as a kid. I really think the leauge would have a better chance in the spring whre it could play weekend games. I appreciate the affordibility issue the leauge will have but with games on Thurs/Friday nights it would be very hard to take a family to these games (small children). I would love a Louisiana team, but am excited about the Orlando team , being that I live near Daytona Beach and could drive to thr games.

I absolutely love the whole idea of another football league but for one, do you think this "new" league can really stand to compete against the NFL? The whole idea of this is fantastic, but I think in order to gain a much larger fan base it really needs to played in the NFL off season so we the football fans have something else to watch while we are waiting for the NFL season to begin. We have seen in the past the few other football leagues come and go due to their inability to compete, so if you were to run in the off season I believe there would be a greater chance of success. The NFL has a huge and devoted fan base and if offered something to watch in the off season I believe would give the new UFL a greater chance to developing a devoted fan base of their own. I truly believe running this during the NFL season is a certain recipe for failure even of the games are played/ televised on Thursdays and Fridays, most people have plans on those days and may not be able to enjoy the games, so in reality running in the off season seems a much better and viable idea.

I am sorry but why do we have to share with NYC couldn't Hartford bring in enough of a crowd on its own next year put a team in NYC . It not like they are going to drive 150 miles for a football game.

Hey Anthony Malbrough, If by "dominating" in Canada you mean getting cut and bouncing from team to team and eventually landing on the worst team in the CFL, than man are you dominating!
Re: Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Ready for the

As a fan of the CFL, and not so much of the NFL, I would love to see another league to watch other than the NFL. Good luck on getting this off the ground. As for Anthony Malbrough, dominating in Canada? What? Come on now. Decent, sure. Dominating? Riiiight.

Anthony, you cannot be serious? Dominating the CFL? The goal of a DB is to not let the other guys get touchdowns, maybe your confused. Nothing like pumping your own tires to people who have never even heard of you.
let players wear a patch from the university they came from!!!

Posted by michael w

Commish, I think one drawback from the NFL is its hard to follow what player went to what college. I know I personally enjoy knowing the winning touchdown catch of the superbowl was an ohio state buckeye!!! but most of the country didnt know!! I dont know the branding rights, but it would be amazing if the players could wear patches from the colleges they went to, so we all can follow our alma mater. I hope this is a stepping stone for some great players to come!!!

Dear Commisioner, Good luck in your iinaugaral season. I believe as you do that all the best players in the U.S are not playing in the NFL.. I think if your league lasts it WILL produce NFL Players. I wish your schedule was from February to May when the competition for Football would be less , but I'm sure there are other factors that I don't know John McGuire Selden NY

will you give players a chance that was not able to make NFL rosters in 2008 or practice squads due to not getting that second chance and that was draft by leagues like the UNGL and the AAFL that have been waiting to show case their talents but our very good players from D1,D1-AA D2 schools?
Re: Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Ready for the

Hi Commish, Admittedly I was a bit disappointed with the announcement of the "Premiere season". This Super Bowl left me starved for even more football. I was even looking forward to the UNGL but they pushed back their schedule to March. I understand that the economy is tough so I will say I'm glad you guys are sticking with it. I had to compose myself and really read what the "Premiere Season" was going to be about. I have a better understanding of it now and look forward to seeing the "Premiere season" unfold. I can't wait for the further announcements about the teams, stadiums, coaches, nicknames and stuff. I hope this works out and it is the start of something big.
Team Branding

Posted by Ron Bodine

Branding teams that are based in two different cities seems to be a very challenging task. The marketing and merchandising becomes very complicated. The most obvious option is that you could simply call the Teams New York/Hartford, Los Angeles/Las Vegas, and San Francisco/Sacramento, but it could compromise fan loyalty and discourage people from purchasing merchandise that displays both city names. Another option is to create separate merchandise that displays either name (instead of both names together). A better idea from a merchandising standpoint, you could even gauge which city deserves the team more in season two with this branding method. There may still be challenges with loyalty using this option, and what would you call the team if it were to reach the championship game? Which city name would you use? Another option would be not to use city names at all. Simply give the teams nicknames without putting city names in front of them. Again, this scenario presents fan loyalty challenges. Perhaps the best use of this idea would be to display only the team nickname on television, and on the team uniforms, but use option number two (above) for merchandising (i.e., branding for each city separately on merchandise). A forth option would be using location names that encompass a broader area than just one or both of the cities. Here are some brainstorms: New York/Hartford..."New England," "Atlantic," "New Netherland." San Francisco/Sacramento..."Golden State," "California," "Northern California." Los Angeles/Las Vegas..."Pacific," "Valley," "Southwest." These may not be the best suggestions, but it's food for thought. I personally prefer using no team city names on television and on the uniforms while using separate branding for both city names on merchandise. Ron Bodine (571)235-7025 rbodine78@gmail.com

I can't wait either. I am a huge virginia tech football fan. I hope some of my favorite Hokies that have not been given a real shot in the NFL will be playing this fall in the UFL. Oh, and please name the Las Vegas franchise the "Jacks". Colors should be red, black, and yellow (think univeristy of maryland). Black Helmet with a jack head on it. Classic appeal without being done before.

Hello and thank you for bringing us more football for the this fall and beyond! My question is on team branding, I have been in the uflaccess site and saw some links to this subject, but Im concerned if I buy say a New York whoever hat, will the name stay with New York or Hartford? The only one I can count on is the Orlando team with no other city associated with them. Thank you for your time.

Mr. Commissioner, I couldn't agree with you more. The UFL could and potentially will become a league of its own. The hiring of former NFL coaches and players adds another demension. We won't even mention the amount of talented players that will emerge. I cannot wait until the season starts. The game, the players, the fans.......The UFL. It's our football! This league will expand and thrive in the need for more football. America's favorite sport. Bring it to'em Commish

I think what the commisioner is doing is great America does have an appetite for more football after seeing numerous league fail like the XFL, AFL, and NFL Europe I think the approach made by the commissioner is very admirable. I only hope to work in this league and provide insight to someone higher up.

I've been playing in Canada and dominating but none of my family and friends see me play. I want to play in this league so bad, I will be ready for any workout , football is my passion and my dedication is second to none. I was drafted by Chris Pamler with the Browns and he know I bring it everyday . All I want is a chance and I will take care of the rest.

"For those who can’t make it to a game due to team proximity, we are going to address those issues with future expansion and a television partner committed to bringing you into the action regardless of the area from which you are watching." Look forward too it, I think its a smart move to just try and get the start up season playing in many cities like you are. Hope you can put teams in Washington D.C. and the Norfolk area, the Chesapeake region a football hotbed.

Mr. Huyghue I am looking foward to the UFL coming about and I would also like to be apart of it. I'm 26 and have been trying for so long to play football for somebody. After my college I was still ready to pad up but nobody ever gave me a chance. I see the UFL as a second chance for me. I tried out for the AAFL but as you know that league never came about but I know the UFL will do good things.
