There has been talk on whether Michael Vick should return to professional football and, more specifically, should he play for the UFL. The UFL will create opportunities for some NFL players; whether on an NFL roster (practice squad included) or out of the NFL for some reason. There may be many talented players, including Michael Vick, who have the ability and desire to play in the UFL. Our mission is to create a family oriented League which will provide all fans with exciting, affordable, and accessible high quality professional football. Selecting players who fulfill this mission is paramount. I can assure you that the UFL will target players who represent our core values and have the potential to fulfill our promise of creating both the stars of the tomorrow and more importantly, the role models of tomorrow.
As I said in earlier blogs, it is vital our fans are partners in the overall creation of this League. With that in mind, we are going to ask for your feedback in a variety of areas. We have already asked for your input in naming the teams and encourage you to keep submitting. We are also planning an online poll on whether we should pursue Michael Vick for one of our teams, if he becomes available. Keep checking back to the web for this and other interactive polls so that we can truly make this league a cooperative effort.

Vick is paying his debt to society. Like any other person released from prison, he's looking for a job. Surely he still has some skills. And provided he remains a responsible citizen and does his job, there's no reason why the UFL can't prosper from him being in the league. The NHL and MLB sign troubled players all the time and assign them to their minor league teams. The NFL and the NBA lack that structure where they can take a small risk on a troubled player. This is where the UFL could easily fill that void for professional football. The UFL has a specific niche that it's trying to fill. It's not competing with the NFL. It's providing a place for professional football players and fans of pro football to enjoy the game. The UFL will provide on-the-field opportunities for players, coaches, and officials to grow into their jobs and allow the big-spending NFL to see talent develop. Participants know they are auditioning on every play. The fans will see that effort in their performance, appreciate it, and pay money to see it. Thus Michael Vick wiil be auditioning for a job back in the NFL by playing his heart out in the UFL. Fans will pay money to see that. Some people will watch because of Vick's notoriety, but at least they are watching and hopefully they will become fans in the process. Others will voice their objections to Vick because of his crimes, but they will be few in number and eventually drowned out after Vick returns to form.

Leave Vick out. If you want a succesfull league you only need three things: 1. Time-You need several years to build a base of players the fans can associate with. If your rosters dramaticly change every year you will fail. People must get to know the players in the league before they get excited about it. Draft young talented players and keep them in the league as long as you can, don't waste time with the Vicks of the world. 2. Unique rules-Don't re-write the rules used in the NFL, but there are plenty of things that can be changed to make the league special. One example is overtime rules. Why not promote field goal kicking? If a game is tied after regulation have a kick-off. Each teams kicker "challenges" the other by marking a distance and attempting. Alternate who marks the distance until one of the kickers makes and the other misses. 3. Fantasy Football-Lets face it, the largest reason the NFL is so popular over the past 10 years is the ease of fantasy football due to the internet. This may be the greatest asset your league can exploit, don't underestimate how important this is. If you start a great fantasy hosting site for your league you will see success. Don't waste your time with "pick'em" and salary cap junk, go the full game full out!

Commish, First of all I'd like to tell you that this is a wonderful idea. One idea would be to spread the league out to other cities. Las Vegas and LA are great but NY and SF, are stretches the 49ers fan base is loyal, and the fact that NY already has 2 teams may be tough. I think having a teams in smaller cities with large football backgrounds would be a great idea. A team in the south is necessary like S. Carolina or N. Carolina. Also to have a team in Detroit would be ideal, with the lions struggling like they are and will be. Good luck and you got my support.

Michael Vick is serving his time for what he did. How does that make him any different than anyone else who did something wrong and paid for it? He has suffered for this and, provided there is evidence that he is redeemed, he deserves a chance. If the UFL doesn't do something with him, the NFL (Notorios Felons League) will jump at a chance to sign him back. Think Pacman, Plaxico, etc.... they all get too many chances before they are punished. Michael has already been punished. Enough already!

people are acting like michael vick committed the biggest crime known to man, he made a mistake and he's paid his debt to society, it's no different than if it had been you, there's no one here who can say that they haven't made a mistake, sometimes people have a lapse in judgment and do stupid things, but that's no need to condemn him and label him a social misfit, we have to learn to be more understanding and forgiving to those who make mistakes, you have to put yourself in his position, and think what if it were you?

Congradulations United Football League. The future is yours. Sports fans are growing tired of the NFL and its monoply. The NFL has become arrogrant. Its biases in responding to misconduct are evident. Vick was a first time offender. He has been maliciously malinged in the media. Vick has been harshly and irrationally punished for actions committed. After conpleting his sentencing he should be allowed to return to the field. Vick was a naive young man who trusted friends who abused his trust. He has learned a valuable lesson. I gurantee you he will come forth a changed individual. I gurantee you he will be a much stronger athlete because he has something to prove. When athletes attempted to support Vick they they were harshly treated. The NFL proved itself weak and non supportive of one of its's members. They gave into the pressure of PETA, a group with questionable motives. Please show yourself to be strong and not easily intimidated. Allow Vick to play. I gurantee others will be watching. Even those who proclaim against Vick will be watching. They might wish that he might fail, but they will be watching. VICK WOULD BE A STAR ATTRACTION FOR THE UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE. IF YOU TAKE THE RISK YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. i HOPE THESE COMMENTS ARE ENTERED. OTHERS COMMENTS WHICH I ATTEMPTED TO WRITE NEVER MADE IT TO THE SCREEN. iF I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM THAN I AM SURE OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLAM.

In order to get players with marketable premier talent that are not already in the NFL you may need to sign players with questionable characters. If they are suspended from the NFL for disciplinary reasons, this league could be their chance to prove that they have learned from their mistakes. But if they continue to make those mistakes they should be out of the UFL. Therefore all players should have a one strike and your out policy. Getting in legal trouble for selfish stupid reasons doesn't just hurt the player, it hurts the team leaving a hole on the field to be filled with a less prepared player to take over. This can ruin a season and frustrate fans.

Do you really think Vick is remorseful about his actions? I truly believe he is only sorry he got caught. How can you say he is a non-violent offender? He was KILLING dogs! I don't usually agree with PETA but he was MURDERING dogs. That is definitely violent. He was not that good in the NFL. He is not a capable quarterback. He should have been converted to a running back. Also, does no one remeber him flipping the bird to fans who booed him becuase he was not a good quarterback? This should be a family oriented league and Vick should absolutely NOT be welcomed into it. This is supposed to be a league for true football fans who don't get enough from the NFL. It does not need to try to appeal to the popular media.

I don't believe it is self righteous to expect our athletes to live up to... at best... common decency. The UFL is a start up and it's public image is very important! I'm just hoping the league will have standards we can all be proud of.

In my opinion i think you guys are taking the proper approach to forming this league and I'm very grateful . Slow & steady, tying up the loose ends and cutting unwanted threads should lead you to great success. Patience is what the fans will need, the owners and even the players. Regarding Michael Vick, I said it before on other blogs and I'll say it on this one, he's serving his time for the crime he has been convicted of. I think he deserves a second chance. If you open the doors to him and others like him and monitor the way he or they conduct themselves and they understand that a second chance is usually the last chance, there should not be any problems. I do hope that you will give the opportunity to play pro ball to others than just the selected players of the NFL. I understand that following the well established NFL will lead to quicker results but it seems you would wind up doing the same thing they are doing and you wind up missing out on talent pools not normally tapped by the NFL. I won't go so far as the other fan and suggest that the tryouts be that wide open that the average-Joe can enter... realistically speaking, I don't want pay a ticket for someone that I might be able to beat in 40. I'm talking about the smaller schools or even semi-pro teams. Maybe even invite talent from the semi pro teams from the state of each franchise to a separate combine. Just a thought.

In regards to a sport that has gambling involved, I'm sorry, a guy who threw away a 9 digit contract on illegal gambling is someone I simply cannot trust playing in a league where potentially $millions can be wagered on. Now, if the UFL was not a wagering league, I'd say give him a chance.

Best of luck to the United Football League! Hope to see the following: 1. Quality Coaches and Front Office staffs. 2. Drafting and signing of players from local and regional colleges via territorial rights system. 3. Signing some "name" players from the NFL , Arena League and CFL. Not superstars with outlandish contracts, but players who of high quality with some name recognition. 4. Fan participation and possibly ownership in some form. We here at the Virtual USFL will be following the league and we wish you good luck!

I really would like to see the UFL walk the fine line in signing high profile players like this, (i.e. Vick, Jones, and others) Be very careful if you bring these players in your league. The league may get the publicity, but it may be BAD publicity, something this league doesnt need. I would vote NO on this issue.

About Vick, I think that the marketing would be good for the league. I don't know that I could root for the guy but I am sure that a lot of people could and I really want to see this league survive. Too bad it is being played in the fall not the spring. I think that spring football is a void that needs filled now. With the AFL failing though, perhaps there will be some interested owners, players, and team personnel to make this league an immediate success. Here's hoping. By the way, have there been any announcements about how the draft will work and how player assignment to teams will work? I can't wait to see some rosters and coaching staff for each team. I can't wait to see teams...

Bring Vick in along with a strong-worded statement (made both privately to Vick and publicly to fans) that any actions that reflect poorly on the UFL will trigger the immediate reaction of expulsion from the league. This bylaw will be applied to all employees: all players, coaches, and personnel will be given one shot in this league. This could prove to be a potential marketing gem; for every article about the "sixteenth chance" the Bengals give Chris Henry, there will be a line or two about how the United Football League does not allow criminals to continue employment. This way, bringing Vick in is a no-lose situation: either he comes in, behaves himself, and attracts many viewers because of his on-field feats or he comes in, messes up once, and is thrown out of the league, leading to respect from potential viewers who would expect a startup league to hold onto Vick for as long as possible.

The United Football League will be a success. People are looking for something new. The NFL has become a monoply. They have become arrogrant. The United Footrball League will give talented players who have often been sidestepped by the NFL a chance to demonstrate their talents. As a recent example demonstrated, a backup quarter back was forced into the position of team quarterback when the desired quarterback decised to switch teams. The backup quarterback has little experience on the field. An individual player can sit on the bench for a number of years without being given the opportunity to display his talents. Unlike the NFL the NBA used its bench. Michael Vick should be given an opportunity to play. He has paid his dues. The NFL did not support him when he needed them most. They sevely punished Michael for his offense while taping others on the shoulder who had committed much greater offenses. Please do not allow those who continue to speak out against Michael to intimidate you as they intimidated the NFL. Michael would draw attraction to the team. Even those who protest against Michael will be there supporting him. Michael is a star. he will continue to be a star. He is a humble young man. He had no prior offenses. The NFL has given some players who engaged in offenses worse than those of Michael's second chances. Think about this. Why haven't the Falcons released Michael if they hate him as they pretend.
Re: Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Quality of UFL Players

If the UFL will target players who represent your core values, then bringing Michael Vick on board tells me that your league's core values are very low due to his dog fighting operation. I mean the guy murdered dogs by hanging them if they didn't perform. He will always be known for what he did no matter what he does in the future. You need to not worry about getting someone in who already has a name. Get somebody that will MAKE a name. Create your OWN face. Don't rely on what someone else has already done. THAT will be what turns heads.
Re: Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Quality of UFL Players

One thing I hope to see from this league is different types of player talent. The NFL is a league where the differences in offensive and defensive systems is minute, you are limited (due to the talent levels and risk to reward factors) to a hand full of pro-style systems, Smash-mouth and West Cost on offense, 3-4 vs 4-3 on defense. In the AFL this was even more true partly by design and rule restrictions. I hope that this league encourages teams to look for players with a wider range of skill sets. Go ahead and see if a team can find a QB to run an option drive for a series or two each game, or why not come up with a team to run a 2 QB set with some frequency? There are 100's of colleges in the NCAA that run the non NFL systems and looking to recruit based of that would be a great way to get players.

I think the league should have open workouts if this is a league for the fans. Allow every "U" the fan an opportunity as well as targeting some high profile names. I believe thats what the average sports fan hates about the NFL its a them and us relationship. Make and allow everyone to feel like not "Us" or "Them" but "We" with the UFL. Have private combines have league targeted free agents and have drafted college stars but open it up too.

Isn't the purpose of him serving prison time to punish him for his actions? I truly do believe that he regrets what he did, and I'm in full support of him when he gets out. He is still young, can still play, and deserves at least one more chance. It's not too late for him to repair his image, I mean the only reason people hate him so much is because he was so darn good and popular. If this had happened to someone like Kliff Kingsbury, it really wouldn't be that big of a deal. It would also bring an exceptional amount of media attention to the UFL, as well as put butts in seats...its just the way it goes. Look at Barry Bonds; people hated him, but masses of people still flocked to Giants games to watch him, and only him, because he was electric. Bottom line is the guy made a huge mistake, and he's paying for it big time already (prison sucks), don't further crucify him for his actions.

if vick serves his "debt to society" to the satisfaction of the appointed authorities, i don't see why he can't have a place in the UFL, or any other pro league. allowing vick -- and others who may have stumbled in the past -- a fresh start is by no means an indication of a league that will do anything to attract big-time players to generate the most revenue. letting said athelets slide when an infraction DOES occur, however, would be. additionally, i don't think we can make a blanket judgement about persons with checkered pasts. as a non-violent offender, vick -- with a clean bill from the state -- could easily be IN. i don't see this being a problem if he stays on the straight and narrow (and you can chuck him if he doesn't). maurice clarett, on the other hand? lawrence phillips? now we're talking about something far different. there's a line to be drawn, for sure. let's just be careful not to draw it too early for no other reason than to appease our own self-righteousness.

Michael Vick has done his time, and his market value is too great to pass up. He'll sell tickets, merchandise, and create much needed publicity for a start-up league operating alongside the NFL giant. I say sign him.

I would really be against bringing Vick in, he's just not the type of guy that i can cheer for. But, ultimately, I guess he would bring the UFL some instant recognition. I think opening the doors to Michael Vick would ultimately send the wrong message. Although his athletic abilities are mind boggling, you risk being associated with his personal and decision making abilities; which he has shown that he in not capably of making sound judgment off the field. Not all of us was raised in the best of situations, but we made a decisionto either get out and change the hand we were dealt or stay and become a prisoner of our environment. If you want to soar like an eagle, you don’t hang out with ducks. He needs counseling and behavioral training… The ole saying; your network is your net worth proves right in his case – he lost so much to gain what?

There is a fine line when dealing with a player such as Micheal Vick. I believe the young man has made a bad decision in life as we all have. He is paying the price for his actions now. We all deserve a second chance and being that he does understand the choice that he made was unwise and is remouresful for it he should be given the oppurtunity to play again. We have to be careful on categorizing all players that get in some form of trouble with the law. The UFL should allow him to participate in their league if they strongly feel that he is an asset to the league. We all know that he will sell tickets but we also can give our children someone to look at and say "we all make mistakes in life. The key is to correct our mistakes and strive to do things the right way."

I wish the league the best and hope to attend some games, but I'd be inclined to boycott if Vick joins the league. There are plenty of other up-and-coming young men from the college ranks who can replace him. You can also lure other NFL guys who might jump ship. This is like what the ABA did with the NBA. Ultimately, the ABA ended-up proving themselves with home grown guys like Dr. J. and the merger happened. Do it on your own with guys you can go to bed thinking that they could be a role model for your kids. Best of luck!

No! I think, though it would create buzz around the league, it is a PR nightmare. There are already, based on supposition, people calling the UFL "The All Convict League". If you are trying to make the league a "family" environment where role models are created, why go after a convicted felon. There are many talented players out there with a clean pedigree and the FOOTBALL can stand on its own. Please don't let this league be an outlet for ego-centric, arrogant felons who think the life has two sets of rules. Michael Vick deserves a second chance- yes- but let not the UFL come running after him. This sends the wrong PR message and will sour many on the leagues mission statement. "If you don't stand for anything , you'll fall for evrything" Go UFL- send the right message to our kids!

This is definitely a league created for the average football fan and I for one am glad that the fans finally have a voice. I believe Michael Vick deserves a second chance. He made a bad decison and he's paying for it right now. I believe he's remorseful and eager to make amends for his past actions. On that note, I think it would be a win-win situatiom for the Ufl and for Mr. Vick to repair his image and by creating a gigantic buzz for the Ufl. Imagine the publicity! Either positive or negative. Its true what they say any publicity is good publicity. And this league needs a star! The 2009 Ufl season is going to be very interesting indeed!
