Commissioner Huyghue's Blog - Amazing Launch

Commissioner Michael Huyghue - December 03, 2008

The past two days have been amazing for the UFL. We successfully launched our new website and logo and both have been met with resounding approval. Thanks to our passionate fans, in less than 24 hours, we had almost 40,000 hits. As of this morning, we received over 2,500 “Name Your Team” entries and hundreds of posts to my first blog entry.   Our goal is to keep the website fresh with new information as we continue to finalize all of the details for our inaugural season. The response to our new logo was phenomenal.  Many fans applauded the decision of using blue and green, allowing us to truly be a worldwide entity and not only identifying with our U.S. roots of red, white and blue.  Many fans also liked the 3-D aspect of the logo that illustrates our plans to highlight the stars of tomorrow.  There were some great submissions to our “Name The Team” campaign, many with originality and forethought, and we encourage you to keep submitting.  We are very energized by the comments that we have received thus far and want to hear more from you.  In the next few weeks, I will be conducting a live chat so please check back for the exact date and time.

First of all, I am extremely excited about this new league. It seems like the UFL has a really good chance of succeeding. Secondly, love the name the team option. I've already submitted names for teams in New York, Monterrey, San Fran, and Hartford. It's a great way to make this league interactive and to allow us to contribute and help get this league off the ground. One suggestion. I hope that later you form a team here in Ohio. i'm a Browns fan so i don't have much to look forward to at least in the near future. Anyway, good luck with everything. I will be a constant supporter and contributer of the UFL!

Just a suggestion, I think that San Antonio is a great place for a team. Also, They could play at Alamo Stadium. It is the perfect size. It would sell out or come close every game.

Please no dark top dark bottom unis. They look so cheap and college/HS looking. Terrible. Same goes for non traditional helmet stripes. Those Bronco Panther Titan stripes suck. Also you want to be innovative? And smart? Put some dam padding on the outside shell of the helmet. It is a no brainer that that can prevent shock to the head and reduce injury. I firmly believe NFL refuses to look at this option as they are afraid it will remove the ability to display logo on helmet and reduce the marketing/branding we all crave. It can be done though. Helmet can still have a slick high gloss cover so logos can be attached just like they are now. Diifference is they would probably not hold up to wear, however, who cares? Logo stickers are cheap and the exterior helmet pads also are cheap compared to injuries. Full speed ahead in 2009. GOOD LUCK. I will be a fan. PS: use NFL rules, Except call 10 yard delay of game anytime a ball falls of tee when kicker places and backs away on kickoffs. It gets so old to watch this happen multiple times before they put a guy there to hold it. Penalty would stop this crap. Better yet outlaw those dumb tees that hold nothing and use one with a wire attachment to self hold like the ones the kickers practice with on sideline before kicking important FG's.

You guys had an amazing launch a couple weeks ago. I have been following the progress of the league since may of 2007. And its good to finally hear some good news or shall i say any news at all. But its great to know that during these dire economic times, that something of this magnitude could become a reality. Im very excited and cant wait for more news in the spring of 2009. And I hope some of my team names are in the running to be the official team names. But anyways good luck to the UFL. I'll be watching kickoff in September of 09.

Thank you Michael for communicating with fans through your blog and showing how much fan input matters to your league. The initial group of franchise cities is fantastic and sets the league up for a successful kickoff. I can't wait until Hartford finally gets a pro team back in the CT. I really hope future expansion to San Antonio, Portland, Little Rock, Sante Fe, Oklahoma City and Birmingham can happen within the first few years . Being bold and building foundations in non-NFL regions can only benefit the UFL much like it did for the AFL in the 1960's.

Sounds like the AFL may collapse so u have a chance at getting some players from them. Well at least WR's and QB's.

I think that Indianapolis would be a great place for a team, not to mention in 2012 the super bowl will be played there. Its more the corn in the MIDWEST..

I would love to see a team In ATLANTA AND bring back MIchael Vick IN Atlanta AGAIN pLEASE pLEASE

Re: Amazing Launch

I think this is a great idea of placing the teams in under represented markets however i thing the most under utilized market is in Nebraska where all we do is grow corn and men who play football. think of the sea of red an UN games now give Nebraska a pro team to root for too and you have something! I actually live in Denver now but have always dreamed of having a pro team in Nebraska where the only team they have is the huskers it could really work!

Re: Participating in the UFL as a PLAYER

I am a former NFL player, I played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2005-06 season as a S/DB/N/D.I was released then brought back to the team and then release again due to position needs to the team..so they say..anyhow I went on and continue my career in the AFL in NY.I would love to be back outdoors and be apart of the UFL..How do my agent and I go about working on that?

Please put a team in Cincinnati, we haven't had professional football since the 80's!

Re: Amazing Launch

Commissioner, why would you want to go head to head against the NFL? Consider March thru July/August so that there is yearround football.

Re: Amazing Launch

hi there, i know you have a list of teams but i believe that another team in Wisconsin would be great, i mean if you need market success numbers, look at the Green bay team, out of respect to this league i will not say their name, they draw millions of fans each year to their games, we here in Appleton,WI we have less population about 72,000 is our current pop. We have everything a big market has, broadway type theaters nighlife exceptional college systems and also a thriving and growing downtown distric with new development every year. we welcome change and new ideas to add to the quality of life here in little old wisconsin. our fans our the best fans anywhere and would be grateful and respectful of the UFL and everything this league has to offer. notable names to come out of these schools in this state. lee evans, micheal bennett , erasmus james, ron dayne, mark tauscher, troy vincent and so on. I really hope that the ufl does not forget the little huys like the NFL has, we have money too and we are all blue collared hardworking people here, we have money and would gladly spend our money on a quality product like the UFL. thank you for any consideration. please feel free to contact me back at projektn9ne@gmail.com

i think iowa would be a good market for a team. look at all the crazed iowa and iowa state fans that would love a pro team to root for.

Re: Amazing Launch

I think that if you really want to get this leauge going the UFl needs to find and include the Central part of the United States so far all the confirmed teams are far west coast or far east coast!!

Re: Amazing Launch

I hope the Orlando team is called the "Greyhounds." Don't know about SF, I'd rather have 2 LA teams if possible. But yes, bring on the UFL!!!

Re: Amazing Launch

What about a UFL videogame? Call 2K Sports and have them make UFL 2K10, it would help promote the UFL and make us football gamers happy too! A win-win.

Re: Amazing Launch

Wondering why all the teams are on the coasts. Looks like you're leaving out the entire middle of the country, and wouldn't you really be missing the boat NOT to have a franchise in Texas? SAN ANTONIO. Has to be. They already have a stadium. Too many football fans in Texas not to think about us down here.

I am so pleased to see Orlando is in the running! I think the UFL would be very pleased with the fan reception of central Florida. I have been wanting to buy a new football for myself and my young children, however I will be waiting until you guys sell the brand new officail UFL football!

Dwayne makes a good point, the less over the top the uniforms and logos, the more the teams are taken seriously, performance aside.

Re: Amazing Launch

I know Memphis has had a bad track record with sports teams, but it usually because of reasons outside of the city's and fan's control. I would like to remind you that during the USFL days, we were second in attendance behind Denver. If the product is good, we will come.

Re: Amazing Launch

Large cities that already have professional franchises would not be as supportive as some smaller cities without a team to cheer for. I am originally from Riverside, CA. I would love to see my hometown with a professional football team. Places like Birmingham, AL; Columbia, SC; El Paso, TX are all itching for a team to call their own. The late, great, Walter Peyton actually tried to bring an NFL expansion team to Riverside, CA before his untimely death. After he passed away, the idea died as well.

Re: Amazing Launch

Posted by Melvin Bailey

Mr, Huyghue, there is not a bigger lover of football than me. I dream of a league that is played during the NFL off-season so I can watch professional football all year long. If your leage started in April or May, it would wrap up just as the NFL starts their pre-season games. Further more, since your league is outdoors, the weather is nicer so more fans will attend the games.

Re: Amazing Launch

Commissioner-Please avoid using ANY team names that do not end in an S !Blitz,Magic, Fire etc.make the teams seem MINOR league.

Re: Amazing Launch

Great idea. I have noticed many great college players that go undrafted. This is the perfect way to give them another chance at playing football. When Michael Vick is out of prison it would be cool to see him get a second chance too.

Re: Amazing Launch

Congratulations, you guys have done an amazing job. Please work with the UFL organizations to keep the uniforms simple. Please try to stay away from the arena/CFL look. I feel it make the teams seem much more legitimate.

This should be great fans deserve teams built for the markets. Please visit nybandits.org a New York Semi-Pro team that will stand behind the UFL

My only hope is that Portland gets a team

Re: Amazing Launch/name the team

Posted by Alex35332

Commish, the smartest thing you could do in terms of team names would be to make sure that you end up picking names that reflect something about that city or state or whatever. Avoid generic names like dragons, fire (or any NFL Europe old name) that are good animals but they say nothing about their towns.

Re: Amazing Launch

This is an amazing idea and so far this principle seems to be a great blend of sound economics and marketing. It should appeal to a wide variety of football fans.

San Francisco is known for technology companies K Apple, Palm, HP ecxt... why not brand the San francisco team with a technologically advanced people? The Cylons from the new version of Battlestar Galactica? It already has an established name ans a cult following and you would sell tons of merchandise and attract fans from an audience other than just a football audience. Hockey did it with the Anaheim Ducks from that movie with Emilio Estevez. L.A. could be the Movie Stars or Rock Stars. Seattle could be the Starbucks Coffee Grinders. Imagine that audience and the merchandise you could sell? You could grow the UFL to the point that the NFL would have to merge with the UFL the way they had to merge with the AFL back in the sixties when teams like the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders exct..... grew in popularity to rival if not surpass the established NFL teams. Think about it! San Francisco Cylons, Sacramento Terminators alah Governor Arnold the Terminator Schwarzenneger Seattle Starbucks Roasters, L.A. Movie Stars or Rock Stars. Just a thought? I'd jump ship for the San Francisco Cylons personally. Screw the San Francisco 49ers. 49ers kind of sucks as a name. Cylons would be cool. Starbucks Roasters Heck Yeah! John in San Francisco.

Well I would say instead of calling it outdoor football call it stadium football.I mean you don't necessatily want to cheat yourself out of a good domed stadium just because you would want to be bullheaded and say outdoor football now would you?And just to be curious how much would it cost to build a decent 40,000 seat stadium?

Please..Please...Please put a team in Hartford we have so many sports fans that are so knowledeable and passionate. I know for sure that the UFL would no problem succeeding in CT. Please mr. commisioner we are the largest media market in the US without a pro team and also the richest state in the US so their would be plenty of potential season ticket holders
